In July 2007, I decided to take a chance on travel nursing and have never looked back. I recently completed assignments in Tucson and Albuquerque and enjoyed them both very much. My motto is "adapt and overcome."

It has served me well in my assignments and helps me make the most of traveling. I think travelers need to be very flexible with schedules to make the most of each assignment.

Seeing amazing local sights is just one of the reasons I enjoy traveling. I also appreciate the fantastic relationships and people I have met through my travel assignments. One of those people is my Foundation agent.

I chose Foundation because it's a company devoted to dialysis. I stay because I have a wonderful agent and everyone has been so great to me.

Mary Salas, RN

As a chronic dialysis nurse, I have the opportunity to make a difference in patients' lives and my co-workers' lives every day. As a Foundation travel nurse, I have experienced many different processes and methods of care as a travel nurse. I try to share my knowledge to help each clinic I work at.

I decided to travel in January 2007 after researching the option for a few months. After many questions, I chose to take the leap with Foundation. My agent helped me make up my mind and has taken great care of me for the past two years.

The benefits of travel nursing are plentiful, but I enjoy the adventure of visiting new places and meeting new people best. I continue to travel because it gives me the opportunity to visit the many sites throughout the country.

Janice Krupski, RN

Dialysis-jobs-janice-krupskiI began traveling as sort of a relief from work and family stress. I thought I was doing what was best for my husband, getting him out of the summer heat of New Orleans. As it turns out, it was the best thing that could have happened to me.

I was stressed at first, but my confidence in my abilities as a nurse kept things under control. I met many new people who became friends and learned that there were still things I could learn from others. I realized there are many different ways of doing things. And I could share my experience with others as well.

Traveling became very rewarding for me. I knew I was helping other units just by being there. I chose to return to places I had been before because of the friends that I had made and my enjoyable experiences in those institutes. I also wanted to revisit some of the locations I had been to because I felt I hadn't seen all there was to see.

Although Foundation Medical Staffing is not the only travel nursing company that I have traveled with, it is by far one of the most competent and accommodating companies. In two and a half years, I have signed at least five travel contracts through Foundation Medical and have found them to be "Johnny on the spot" when problems arise (and they do, no matter what company I've traveled with).

My agent has always seen to it that I get the assignment I wanted and the contract says exactly what I wanted it to. When it comes to housing, they will address the problem immediately and always to my satisfaction. Occasionally the travel assignment itself will pose a few unexpected surprises, (e.g. under staffing, work schedules and unexpected time off). In every case, my agent has been there for me, dealing directly with my supervisor to address any and all concerns I have.

Foundation has always been there for me and as long as I travel, I plan on staying with Foundation Medical Staffing.

Melvina LeBlue, RN

In December 2007, Melvina decided to hit the road, see the country and explore her field as a travel nurse. Since then, she's discovered the excitement of being a travel nursing and has broadened her skill set by working in a variety of practice settings. Oh, and the increased income doesn't hurt either!

Melvina says, "I chose to work with Foundation because my agent is very supportive and I feel really valued there." Since she travels with her children, ages seven and thirteen, Melvina appreciates how accommodating Foundation has been. Her agent helps her find daycare and good schools for her kids in each location, so her kids love traveling too.

Her first assignment in Hagerstown, Maryland is her favorite so far. Melvina had never traveled before and was concerned about how she would adapt. The facility had high expectations of her and she worked hard to live up to those expectations. She says, "It helped that the staff accepted me and we worked so closely that we became like family." In fact, when the winter came her co-workers made sure that Melvina was safe and could get to work since she was unaccustomed to the snow.

Throughout her travels, Melvina has accumulated a collection of extraordinary experiences. From working with a blind patient who didn't tell Melvina she was blind to a patient who pretended to be deaf, she's seen and learned a lot!

Melvina's dream assignment is in a resort-type location where she can go to work, do her job and at the end of the day have some energy left over. Of course, her kids want to go to Las Vegas!

As a seasoned traveler, Melvina has some great advice for fellow travelers or those considering traveling. She says, "Go in to every assignment with an open mind. Each one is a unique experience that you can learn from." She ends with her philosophy on life—treat people the way you want to be treated.
